Is DeepSeek Better Than ChatGPT? Detailed Comparison

Author: Andy Samue | 2025-02-10

ChatGPT has been around for more than 2 years now, and no model has surpassed its accuracy, user-friendliness, and intelligence before DeepSeek R1.

DeepSeek R1 is released by a China-based company a few days ago. It has become the most downloaded app in the USA only within a week. The developer company’s claim that the R1 AI model is being made at a much lower cost than ChatGPT, Gemini, or other such models has shaken the financial markets.

I tested DeepSeek and ChatGPT for certain criteria to determine which AI model is better. In this article, I will comprehensively demonstrate my experiments to find out “ Is DeepSeek better than ChatGPT .”

DeepSeek vs ChatGPT – Quick Overview

DeepSeek R1 and ChatGPT represent different approaches to natural language processing (NLP) and AI problem-solving. DeepSeek uses the Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture, activating only the most relevant parameters from its 671 billion parameter pool for each task. In contrast, ChatGPT relies on a traditional transformer model, which is less efficient.

In terms of performance, DeepSeek excels at solving technical problems, achieving 90% accuracy in complex mathematical tasks. Meanwhile, ChatGPT stands out for its contextual understanding and text generation capabilities, making it more suitable for creative writing and conversational content.

Customization-wise, DeepSeek offers advanced options for technical users but has a steep learning curve. ChatGPT prioritizes ease of use, making it accessible even to non-technical users.

Is DeepSeek Better Than ChatGPT? A Quick Verdict

For developers and technical experts, DeepSeek’s efficiency and cost-effectiveness make it a solid choice. However, ChatGPT leads in content generation, creative writing, and language translation, thanks to its superior accuracy and user-friendly interface. Depending on your needs, one may suit you better than the other.

Next, I’ll compare both models in detail, helping you determine which one best suits your specific needs.

DeepSeek VS ChatGPT: 8 Key Differences

1. Content Creation

To compare the content generation feature, I asked DeepSeek and ChatGPT to provide me with a 200-word article on the topic of Technological Advances in AI. I used the following prompt:

dot I am writing a comprehensive essay on “Technological Advances in AI.” Please provide me with a 200-word essay mentioning the new technologies and their impact on AI. The writing should be formal and easy to read.

DeepSeek

DeepSeek generated the content almost instantly after some delay. The generated content was somewhat similar to ChatGPT’s. However, unlike ChatGPT, I liked how it structured the text into smaller paragraphs. However, the language sounded quite technical and robotic, making DeepSeek less efficient for content generation.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT generated the content a bit faster than DeepSeek, but the content was too wordy, and the paragraphs were lengthy and hard to follow. Besides, the content was similar to DeepSeek’s but was more readable and easily comprehended.

With the above experiment, I would like to give an edge to ChatGPT here for creating easily comprehensible content. But DeepSeek also did a great job generating a well-structured essay.

2. Coding

Coding is one of the tasks for which AI models are most widely used. Programmers and students use these models to create websites and software, debug their code, or perform testing. So, to test if DeepSeek and ChatGPT can generate well-structured code, I asked both to write code for a food delivery website. Here is the prompt I passed to each:

dot Write code for a food delivery website with 3 pages: Home, Order, and Menu. The Home page should display the introduction and features of the website. On the Order page, the user must be able to place an order for some food. On the Menu page, the user should be able to view a menu with 10 dishes and select the ones they want. The flow would go like this: The user visits the website, views the menu, selects items, clicks on the Order button, and goes to the Order page, where they enter their delivery information. The website should be fully functional and formatted. So, I need HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP code.

DeepSeek

To generate the entire code, DeepSeek took 120 seconds, which is quite long. The generated code was well-structured and divided into different modules for each page. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP codes were divided into corresponding sections. As far as the functionality is concerned, the code worked perfectly.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT also did a great job at generating well-structured code. When compared to DeepSeek, ChatGPT’s code was more readable, compact, and well-formatted. Look and functionality-wise, the website was almost the same as that generated by DeepSeek.

Quality-wise, both tools did a good job but when it comes to code formatting and readability, ChatGPT was better. Also, it generated the entire code within 40 seconds, which is quite faster than DeepSeek.

3. Text Summarization

Generating comprehensive summaries is another important feature in which LLMs must excel. For this, I provided ChatGPT and DeekSeek with the same document to summarize and asked them to generate a comprehensive summary.

dot Please summarize the attached document while maintaining the context.

DeepSeek

DeepSeek took approximately 15 seconds to generate the summary. Again, the content sounded too robotic because of the language used. I personally did not like the result.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT generated the summary within 12 seconds, which is faster than DeepSeek. Also, the summarized content was pretty comprehensive, well-structured, and conversational. I liked its conversational style the most, which made the text more readable.

Overall, ChatGPT offered a more coherent and conversational summary, whereas DeepSeek’s result felt robotic and lacked fluidity.

4. Language Translation

Conversing in multiple languages and translating them is another expected feature in all LLMs. ChatGPT does a pretty good job in this regard, but let’s see how DeepSeek compares by giving both models the same task: translating a paragraph into Urdu.

DeepSeek

Translating the text into another language took DeepSeek 13 seconds. Although it is fast, the translation was inconsistent and did not make sense at some points.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT only took 9 seconds to translate the paragraph. The translated content was quite consistent and sensible, showing ChatGPT’s ability to translate content better than DeepSeek.

ChatGPT also left DeepSeek behind in translating the content. Although DeepSeek did not do an entirely lousy job, there is still some room for improvement.

5. Knowledge and Updates

ChatGPT has a broad knowledge base and receives frequent updates, enhancing its versatility. DeepSeek focuses on specialized fields with high accuracy and has less frequent updates. However, it's important to note that DeepSeek has been actively improving its models, as seen with the release of DeepSeek-V3 in December 2024.

6. User Experience and Interface

DeepSeek’s user experience is currently less smooth, with frequent performance issues and reports of sluggishness. Many users have also faced problems like verification code not received and sign-up failed, possibly due to a sudden influx of new users.

ChatGPT has also experienced similar issues. In terms of user experience, both are relatively comparable.

7. Creativity and Writing Style

ChatGPT excels in creative writing and casual tasks. DeepSeek is better for technical writing and structured content like coding projects.

8. Pricing Comparison

DeepSeek offers a free tier and affordable API pricing, with rates as low as $0.55 per million tokens for certain models. ChatGPT’s Plus plan costs $20/month for GPT-4 access, while its Pro plan at $200/month provides unlimited premium features. DeepSeek is more budget-friendly.

Is DeepSeek Better Than ChatGPT? Pros and Cons

Aspect DeepSeek ChatGPT
Cost-Effectiveness More affordable API pricing Subscription-based model with free and paid tiers
Content Generation Precise but overly technical writing Conversational, engaging, and more readable
Coding Well-structured code for complex tasks Faster, more compact, and readable code
