[2025 Updated] Can Grammarly Be Detected as AI?

Author: Andy Samue | 2024-12-02

Many students are being falsely flagged left and write with AI content after AI detectors have exploded on screen. On top of that, universities are tightening rules on all apps they believe to be using AI for academic writing, fearing it affects academic integrity. This has raised concerns for students who use tools like Grammarly.

Although an AI app for correcting grammar, can Grammarly be detected as AI? If yes, is Grammarly even considered AI for students? To answer you truthfully, we conducted a real-world test and shared its output here. The results that came out will explain if Grammarly’s features lead to AI-generated content and if it can be flagged by AI detection tools or not. So, let’s begin!

Does Grammarly Count as AI?

Grammarly is a writing tool to improve writing with AI-powered features. But when was Grammarly first released you might want to know. July 1, 2009, is the date when Grammarly was released by Ukrainian founders Alex Shevchenko, Max Lytvyn, and Dmytro Lider. Initially web-based, it has grown to support multiple platforms and features. Here’s what it’s capable of:

  • Fixes grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors.

  • Suggests tone adjustments to suit your audience.

  • Ascertains originality by comparing content to online sources.

  • Encourages respectful and inclusive phrasing.

  • Improves clarity with rewording suggestions.

  • Tailor tips based on your writing and audience.

  • Quickly creates content for various needs.

  • Offers team writing support and custom branding.

  • Provides encryption and data protection for businesses.

  • Integrates with apps like Google Drive and Microsoft Word and provides security features for enterprise users.

In the past, we’ve discussed Grammarly’s features and user reviews, compared this app with other plagiarism checker tools, and also shared its better alternative. Here are links to those posts. Click to read:

Can Grammarly Be Detected as AI: Actual Test

To conduct an actual test with Grammarly AI we used a human-written sample as a benchmark. Then, we edited it grammar checker. We edited sample in two ways:

  • Grammar-Only Edits - We only applied Grammarly’s grammar corrections.

  • Comprehensive Grammarly Edits - We accepted all Grammarly suggestions, including rephrasing and rewriting.

Can Grammarly Be Detected as AI: Test Result

Test Sample Editing Level Originality Result
Grammar-Only Edits Grammar corrections only such as punctuation. 100% Likely Original
Comprehensive Grammarly Edits All grammar suggestions and rephrasing. 100% Likely AI

After performing editing, we passed both test samples through a credible AI detector like Originality to check whether can Grammarly be detected as AI.

  • We pasted human-written content into Google Docs and applied some light grammar checks with Grammarly. Then, we pasted lightly edited content into Originality and used it’s “Lite Model” to examine for AI. The result came out to be 100% original.

  • Next, we suggested Grammarly’s rephrasing suggestions, and adjusted our content’s tone to be persuasive. Then, we pasted heavily edited text into Originality. The output came out to be 100% AI.

This tells us that if you heavily rely on Grammarly’s suggestions and rephrasing that’ll make your writing less like original draft and more influenced by AI. However, AI Detectors can also give false positives, where they flag human-written content falsely as AI. But you can reduce them. Here’s how:

  • Make sure to write unique and original content that hasn’t been written before.

  • Limit use of Grammarly’s rephrase or rewrite features.

  • Scan your entire document with AI Detector, not just its sections.

What Happens If Students Are Caught Using AI-Generated Content?

If students are caught using AI-generated content they can face serious consequences, depending on severity of offense and their institute’s policies. Here’s what might happen to them:

  • They might fail an assignment or course.

  • Restrictions like limited course enrollment or extra advising may apply.

  • Severe or repeated offenses can lead to being removed from the institute.

  • Can hurt their chances for grad school, research, or academic roles.

  • Integrity issues may harm job prospects in certain fields.

  • If copyright laws are violated it might land them in legal trouble.
